Passing of John Bickle

With a heavy heart, I would like to share the passing of our board member, John Bickle of Welcome.

John passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, March 9, at Northumberland Hills Hospital after succumbing to his battle with brain cancer. You may remember me telling you that John had been at Ed’s House in Cobourg, a palliative care facility, but after nearly two months he got up and walked out. Since then, we had the pleasure of this feisty farm boy continuing to be part of our lives. He came to meetings, worked on equipment, and shared many smiles and laughs with all of us.

You may not know that John was a Hope Township councillor who fought to help us obtain our original dome building, which allowed us to begin developing the facilities for the Hope Agricultural Heritage Club. After Hope Township became Ward 2, he continued to do his best to support and encourage the growth of our agricultural community. For a number of years he also served as a councillor for the Municipality of Port Hope.

At the time of writing this, I do not yet have the details for John’s Celebration of Life, but I understand that there will be one. MacCoubrey Funeral Home will have the announcement, and I will share the details with you as soon as they become available.

Our club sends its warmest and most heartfelt condolences to his wife, Alice, and their two sons.

I’m sure John is already riding his tractor in the sky, offering suggestions to whoever will listen.

John, you will be deeply missed by all your fellow tractor lovers at the Hope Agricultural Heritage Club.

A somber Note:

The Flags at the Municipality of Port Hope Town Office are now flying at half mast for our John.
